NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that European allies have “gotten the message” from US President Donald Trump regarding defence spending and military responsibilities.
According to his remarks reported from a European diplomatic gathering, European countries are now more seriously considering Washington’s long-standing demand to increase their defence contributions and share a greater burden within NATO.
The statement comes amid rising tensions between the United States and some European allies over security commitments. The US has recently announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany, a move widely seen as part of pressure on Europe to strengthen its own defence capabilities.
Rutte also highlighted that several NATO members are now increasing military readiness, improving logistics, and preparing for potential regional security challenges, particularly in areas such as the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
Analysts say the developments reflect a broader shift in NATO, where European countries are being pushed to take greater responsibility for their own defence as the US reassesses its global military commitments.
