HEALTH
The National Dialogue Committee (NDC) has expressed serious concern over the health of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, demanding that he be allowed to consult his personal physician immediately.
The statement from the NDC comes two days after the government confirmed that Imran underwent a medical procedure for an eye ailment at a hospital in Islamabad last week, a disclosure that sparked outrage within PTI, as neither the party nor his family had been informed.
The NDC, formed by former PTI leaders including Fawad Chaudhry, Dr Shahzad Waseem, and former Sindh governor Imran Ismail, convened in Islamabad on Saturday. Attendees included Chaudhry, Ismail, former Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar, and veteran politician Munir Ahmad Khan.
In its statement, the NDC called for immediate arrangements allowing Imran Khan to meet his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, to ensure prompt and quality medical care.
“God forbid, if any harm comes to the PTI founder’s health, the entire leadership of the ruling coalition will be responsible, and the right to take legal action against them is reserved,” the statement read.
The group referenced precedent, noting that a medical board and access to personal physicians had been provided to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during incarceration, and said Imran should receive the same treatment.
“The right to health for any prisoner is inalienable under the law. Depriving a prisoner of medical care, deliberately endangering their health, is equivalent to taking their life and constitutes a criminal act,” it said, urging the government to stop politicising the health of political opponents.
The NDC also condemned the government’s handling of the matter, describing federal and Punjab authorities’ approach as “regrettable, undemocratic, and contrary to their political claims.” The statement accused the ruling coalition of concealing facts about Imran Khan’s eye condition, alleging that repeated misinformation indicated an attempt to defame state institutions.
The group also criticized National Assembly opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai for claiming that Imran’s health was not as severe as portrayed. Calling him the government’s “B-team,” the NDC said Achakzai’s silence was evidence of siding with the government.
The NDC concluded by calling on PTI and opposition leaders to stage a joint sit-in at the Prime Minister’s House to press for Imran’s medical rights.
Separately, Professor Dr Rana Imran Sikander, Executive Director of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), stated that Imran’s eye procedure was completed “smoothly” in approximately 20 minutes. He confirmed that the former prime minister remained “vitally stable” during the intervention and was discharged with routine post-procedure care instructions.
