POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The Sindh Assembly’s private members’ day on Tuesday witnessed heated debates and commotion as three out of five resolutions presented by opposition lawmakers were rejected by the treasury benches, leveraging their numerical majority.
Rejected Resolutions Spark Debate
Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) legislator Muhammad Aamir Siddiqui’s resolution for establishing an independent commission to evaluate and improve Sindh’s education system was rejected, with Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Zia Lanjar stating that such a commission already exists with civil society representation.
Similarly, the house rejected two other resolutions: one by MQM-P member Muhammad Rashid Khan, addressing alleged corruption in the Sindh Public Service Commission, and another by MQM-P’s Sabir Hussain, proposing a population policy to address the province’s growing demographic challenges.
Treasury and Opposition Unite on Two Resolutions
The assembly, however, unanimously adopted two resolutions presented by MQM-P women lawmakers.
1. Autism Support Resolution:
MPA Fouzia Hameed’s resolution called for the establishment of state-of-the-art autism centres to cater to individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). She highlighted the growing prevalence of ASD and the lack of adequate facilities in Sindh.
Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho supported the resolution, stating, “This initiative will bring relief to families affected by autism.” She added that the provincial government would establish autism rehabilitation centres in every district and provide vocational training for autistic individuals.
2. Gender Equality Resolution:
Another resolution by MQM-P MPA Farah Sohail urged integrating gender perspectives into all government policies and ensuring equal opportunities for all genders. The resolution was unanimously adopted, reflecting a collective commitment to gender inclusivity.
Question Hour and Heated Exchanges
The session also featured intense exchanges during the Question Hour. Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi criticised Social Welfare Minister Tariq Talpur’s responses, describing them as unsatisfactory. He blamed the government for delayed development projects during its 16-year tenure.
Dr Abdul Basit, chairperson of the Standing Committee on Social Welfare, accused the department of withholding crucial documents. Minister Talpur countered, claiming the opposition member never approached him and dismissed the allegations as baseless.
Talpur informed the assembly that nine NGOs funded by the social welfare department were working satisfactorily under strict monitoring, with funding withdrawn if standards were unmet.
Adjournment Motion on Loadshedding
The house agreed to discuss PPP MPA Heer Soho’s motion on unannounced electricity loadshedding in Sindh during the next session on Friday, allocating two hours for the discussion.
Conclusion
The session underscored the enduring tension between the treasury and opposition benches while showcasing moments of unity on critical social issues like autism support and gender equality.
