Pakistan Army Reaffirms Non-Intervention in Political Negotiations

The Pakistan Army has restated its commitment to remaining apolitical, making clear that it will not participate in any political discussions or negotiations, including with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In response to recent speculation about potential dealings between PTI and the military, a source within the defense establishment, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized that political matters are solely for political parties to handle.

The anonymous source highlighted that the army’s stance on this issue was initially articulated in May this year during a press conference by DG ISPR Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif. At the time, Lt. Gen. Sharif clarified the military’s non-political role, underlining that the army’s duties are guided solely by the constitution and national laws. The DG ISPR specifically mentioned that any conjecture around the military’s involvement in political matters or deals with PTI was unfounded, as the institution adheres to a policy of political neutrality.

The source reiterated that the military respects all political parties, but it has zero tolerance for attacks on the armed forces by any political faction. “If a political group assaults its own army, there will be no communication,” the source said, adding that the military expects those who adopt anti-army rhetoric to abandon the politics of hatred and pursue a constructive political agenda.

The army has consistently reiterated that any political concessions or relief sought by PTI or its leadership, including Imran Khan, must come through political dialogue with other parties, including those within the current government. “The military is a non-political institution, and discussions about political matters must take place within the political sphere,” the source added.

This statement underscores the Pakistan Army's stance of neutrality in political affairs, in line with its constitutional obligations. The message is clear: political parties must navigate their differences and negotiations independently, without expecting intervention or support from the military. Observers see this as a step towards reinforcing democratic norms, ensuring that the military maintains its role as a non-partisan entity devoted to national security and stability.
