Pakistan Assumes UNSC Presidency for July 2025

Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July 2025, marking the country’s eighth term on the Council as a non-permanent member. Islamabad began its current two-year tenure in January 2025 and will serve through the end of 2026.

The presidency rotates monthly among Council members and gives Pakistan an opportunity to shape the agenda and facilitate dialogue on pressing global challenges. Under its leadership this month, the focus is on multilateralism, peaceful dispute resolution, and regional cooperation.

According to the Foreign Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar arrived in New York for an official visit from July 21 to 28. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh.

During the visit, FM Dar will chair and participate in high-level UNSC sessions, including a major conference on the Palestine issue. He will also attend bilateral and multilateral meetings in both New York and Washington, D.C.

One of the major highlights of his visit is participation in the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and Implementation of the Two-State Solution, scheduled for July 28–29. Originally slated for June, the conference was postponed due to the Iran-Israel conflict.

In a statement issued on July 19, the Foreign Office reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. Since October 8, more than 58,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in Gaza due to ongoing Israeli military operations. Pakistan has repeatedly called on the UNSC to intervene for a ceasefire and humanitarian relief.

Dar is also set to preside over a high-level UNSC briefing focused on enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) — a diplomatic initiative Pakistan has long advocated for.

“The meeting is part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to strengthen UN-OIC collaboration for the maintenance of international peace and security,” said a Foreign Office spokesperson.

In addition to multilateral forums, FM Dar will hold bilateral meetings with key global counterparts and UN officials. A major engagement on the agenda is a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, scheduled for July 25 in Washington.

With the UNSC presidency, Pakistan is positioning itself as a strong advocate for international consensus on Palestine, regional harmony, and multilateral diplomacy in a time of global instability.
