POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Pakistan on Monday strongly condemned the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem by Israeli far-right ministers and illegal settlers, denouncing the act as a “shameless provocation” that violates international law and threatens regional peace.
The condemnation followed a mass incursion into the mosque compound on Sunday led by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, during which more than 1,200 Israeli settlers, under police protection, entered the holy site, performing rituals and chanting provocatively. The event coincided with the Jewish commemoration of Tisha B’Av and sparked global concern.
Al-Aqsa Mosque — Islam’s third holiest site — is located in a zone governed by a delicate status quo under Jordanian custodianship. While non-Muslims may visit, they are not permitted to pray there under existing arrangements.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s outrage on social media platform X, stating:
“This sacrilege against one of Islam’s holiest sites is not only an affront to the faith of over a billion Muslims but also a direct assault on international law and the collective conscience of humanity.”
He said Israel’s provocations were designed to inflame regional tensions and disrupt any prospects for peace.
“Systematic provocations and reckless calls for annexation by the occupying power imperil the path to lasting peace,” he said.
The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s demand for an immediate ceasefire, an end to aggression, and the revival of a credible peace process aimed at establishing an independent and viable Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
The Foreign Office also issued a separate, strongly worded statement, warning that the presence of Israeli ministers and settlers in the mosque compound was a “deliberate attempt to provoke religious sentiments globally.”
“The declaration that ‘the Temple Mount is ours’ is a repugnant provocation aimed at altering the historical and legal status of Al-Aqsa,” the statement read.
“Such actions risk igniting a catastrophic spiral of violence in the region.”
The FO urged the United Nations and the international community to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law, and to act urgently to protect the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rights of Palestinians, including their right to self-determination.
Pakistan reaffirmed its long-standing support for a sovereign, contiguous Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s offensive in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians and injured nearly 149,000 others, with over 88% of Gaza destroyed, according to the Palestinian health ministry and Gaza Media Office.
Pakistan has persistently called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, while raising the issue at multiple international forums. Just last week, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar called the Israeli aggression in Gaza a “test case” for the credibility of the UN during a high-level conference on the two-state solution in New York.
