POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Islamabad — A final decision has been made to terminate the National Assembly membership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Sheikh Waqas Akram due to his continuous absence from the House for 40 days without seeking formal leave.
According to sources within the National Assembly Secretariat, a resolution regarding his disqualification will be tabled in the House for a vote within the next seven days. The resolution is expected to be decided during the current session of the assembly.
Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had previously informed the House about Waqas Akram’s unexplained and prolonged absence.
The motion for his disqualification was moved by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Nosheen Iftikhar under Clause 2 of Article 64 of the Constitution. The Deputy Speaker, upon reviewing the matter, directed that proceedings be carried out according to the rules and regulations.
Sources confirm that once the resolution is approved by the House, Sheikh Waqas Akram’s membership will stand terminated.
In parallel, the National Assembly Secretariat has initiated the process of updating parliamentary records. This includes removing disqualified members from the official list following notifications from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The revised list of members and updated party positions will be released shortly.
The National Assembly website will also reflect the updated status as soon as the changes are finalised.
This development comes amid broader moves to tighten attendance and accountability standards within parliamentary proceedings, especially amid increasing criticism of lawmakers' absenteeism and lack of participation.
