POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

ISLAMABAD – June 26, 2025: Marking the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Pakistan has issued a strong statement condemning the systematic and widespread use of torture in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Occupied Palestinian Territories, particularly Gaza.
The Foreign Office (FO) highlighted that since India’s unilateral annexation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, credible reports have consistently documented human rights violations and torture by Indian occupation forces.
“The people of IIOJK continue to be subjected to the worst forms of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment to suppress their inalienable right to self-determination,” the statement said.
The FO also condemned the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where Israeli forces have killed over 56,000 people and injured more than 132,000 since October 2023. Citing a report by a human rights monitor, the FO said the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons was “shocking” and a stain on international conscience.
“Pakistan remains gravely concerned at the widespread and systematic use of torture as an instrument of oppression in situations of foreign occupation,” the statement added.
Solidarity With Victims Worldwide
Reaffirming its stance, Pakistan expressed full solidarity with victims of torture across the world, pledging continued efforts to eradicate torture, uphold justice, and protect human dignity.
“Islam upholds the sanctity and dignity of every human being. Any act of torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment is incompatible with Islamic teachings rooted in justice, mercy, and compassion,” the FO stressed.
Commitment to Human Rights & Reforms
Pakistan reiterated its commitment to international obligations under the UN Convention Against Torture, and highlighted ongoing efforts to reform domestic laws and strengthen accountability:
- Legal reforms and institutional safeguards
- Oversight mechanisms to prevent abuse
- Medical, legal, and psycho-social support for victims
The FO concluded by urging the international community to take notice and hold occupying powers accountable for the use of torture as a political tool. It also called for united global efforts to end the suffering of those living under brutal occupations.
