Pakistan Information Commission Orders State Bank Governor to Disclose List of 1000 Major Defaulters Within 10 Days

The Pakistan Information Commission has issued a directive to the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan to disclose the list of 1000 major defaulters within the next 10 days, pursuant to the Federal Government's Right to Access to Information Act 2017. This decision follows a petition filed by Azmat Khan, a resident of Karachi, seeking transparency regarding individuals who have failed to repay significant loans from various banks, resulting in substantial financial losses for both the country and the banks involved.

The Commission rejected the State Bank's claim of immunity in this case, asserting that information related to defaulters cannot be shielded from public scrutiny. The Commission's order mandates the State Bank to submit the required information within the stipulated timeframe. Non-compliance with this order may lead to legal repercussions under Section 20(f) of the Right to Information Act, 2017.

Petitioner Azmat Khan's request for the list of 1000 major defaulters was carefully evaluated by the Commission, which emphasized that Section 7(d) of the Right to Information Act, 2017, which exempts certain records from disclosure, does not apply to the requested list in this instance.
