Pakistan IT Industry Warns Against VPN Ban, Citing ‘Existential Threat’ to Digital Economy

KARACHI: Pakistan’s IT sector and internet service providers have raised alarm over proposed restrictions on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and internet access, warning that such measures could devastate the digital economy and alienate global clients.
The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@sha) labeled the VPN ban an “existential threat,” highlighting that IT companies and call centers depend on secure VPNs for international client communications. “Blocking VPNs will result in irreparable financial and reputational losses,” said P@sha Chairman Sajjad Mustafa Syed.
The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (Wispap) echoed these concerns. Its chairman, Shahzad Arshad, emphasized that VPNs are essential for legitimate activities such as financial transactions, IT exports, and academic research.
The Public Relations Events Digital Activation Association (Preda) also criticized the frequent disruptions, stating that throttling social media platforms undermines Pakistan’s digital potential and deters foreign investment.
Industry leaders urged the government to avoid blanket bans and instead engage stakeholders to craft a balanced framework that ensures national security without harming the operational needs of the IT sector.
