Riyadh — Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical AI governance during her address at the Leap 2025 technology conference, being held in Riyadh from February 9 to 12.

The conference brought together Pakistani and Saudi business leaders, government officials, and technology experts to explore advancements in digital technology and AI governance.

Ethical AI and Global Collaboration

Speaking at a panel titled “Shaping the Future of Ethical AI: Multilateral Perspectives on Governance and Risk Management,” Khawaja highlighted the transformative potential of AI while stressing the need for robust regulatory frameworks.

She underscored the importance of safeguarding data privacy, security, and fairness in AI systems, advocating for a global governance framework to prevent discrimination and ensure equal access to digital opportunities.

The minister emphasized AI’s role as a tool for social empowerment, extending benefits beyond economic growth to foster a more equitable digital future.

Bridging the Digital Divide and Sustainability

Khawaja called for bridging the digital divide in developing nations through inclusive policies and capacity-building initiatives. She highlighted the need for environmentally responsible AI development, urging efforts to minimize its carbon footprint.

Pakistan’s AI Strategy and Digital Transformation

Outlining Pakistan’s AI strategy, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to developing a comprehensive AI policy focused on technological advancement alongside ethical considerations.

She noted that the government aims to leverage AI for enhancing public services, driving economic growth, and building a sustainable digital ecosystem.

Digital Nation Pakistan Bill, 2024

The minister also highlighted the recently introduced Digital Nation Pakistan Bill, 2024, which aims to centralize social, economic, and governance data while transforming the country into a digital society, economy, and governance model.

Concluding her address, Khawaja urged strengthened international cooperation to shape an inclusive, transparent, and accountable AI-powered future. She encouraged governments, businesses, and technology leaders to collaborate on ethical AI frameworks that promote stability, innovation, and sustainable progress.
