POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Pakistan's Foreign Office has firmly asserted that there will be no compromise on the country’s national security and sovereignty. In a weekly media briefing, Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan responded to India’s recent unilateral actions following the Pahalgam incident.
Khan stated that India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty was a unilateral move, which cannot be accepted as the treaty was brokered by the World Bank. He made it clear that if India attempts to stop the flow of water, Pakistan will respond in a "befitting manner." He further emphasized that any Indian action to halt water flow would be considered an act of war and could destabilize the regional peace and stability.
The spokesperson also addressed Pakistan’s diplomatic steps in response to India’s actions, stating that all visas for Indian nationals have been suspended under the SAARC visa scheme, with the exception of Sikh pilgrims. Additionally, the staff at the Indian High Commission has been reduced to 30 members, and all traffic at the Wagah border has been halted. Pakistan has also closed its airspace for Indian flights.
Khan reiterated that Pakistan’s armed forces are fully prepared to defend national security and sovereignty. He further mentioned that Pakistan has reserved the right to suspend all bilateral agreements, including the Simla Agreement, should India continue with its aggressive actions.
In response to India’s actions, Pakistan has demanded that the international community take notice of India’s violation of international laws. Indian naval, air, and defense advisors in Pakistan have been declared persona non grata, with instructions to leave the country by April 30, 2025.
On the diplomatic front, Khan highlighted the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Turkey, where he held productive discussions with Turkish leadership. He also mentioned the visit of the Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE to Pakistan, during which both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in various fields.
