PHC Halts Arrest of KP CM Gandapur in Liquor Smuggling Case

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has barred the police from arresting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur in connection with a liquor smuggling case, while directing him to appear before the relevant Islamabad court.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Ijaz Anwar and Justice Dr. Khurshid Iqbal heard the petition filed by Gandapur, seeking suspension of his arrest warrant issued by a senior civil judge in Islamabad.

The Chief Minister’s counsel, Bashir Khan Wazir, informed the bench that his client had already obtained protective bail in several cases from the PHC. However, in the liquor smuggling case, a warrant was issued on July 19 by the Senior Civil Judge Islamabad, ordering his arrest and production in court by July 21.

The lawyer argued that the warrant was issued without Gandapur's knowledge, as no formal notice or summon had been received. "Due to his responsibilities as the Chief Executive of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the prevailing security situation, it was not possible for him to appear on short notice,” Wazir added.

He maintained that Gandapur was willing to appear in court, and the delay was not intentional. The petition requested the PHC to suspend the Islamabad court’s warrant to prevent an arrest in the meantime.

After hearing the arguments, the Peshawar High Court issued an order restraining the police from arresting CM Ali Amin Gandapur and instructed him to appear before the relevant Islamabad court on the designated date.

This development comes amid heightened political scrutiny and legal pressure on PTI leadership, with several party members facing ongoing legal proceedings.
