A flight attendant of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been arrested by Customs authorities at Islamabad airport after allegedly trying to smuggle 16 mobile phones into the country upon his return from Canada. The attendant, identified as Faisal Majeed, arrived on PIA flight PK-782 from Toronto on October 24 when he was subjected to a search by Customs officials.
During the search, officials discovered the mobile phones strapped to Majeed's body, leading to his immediate detention. Reports indicate that Majeed was traveling on a tourist visa and had reportedly been tasked with delivering the new smartphones upon his return to Islamabad.
In response to the incident, PIA management issued a show-cause notice to Majeed, demanding an explanation within three days. The airline has initiated an internal investigation into the matter, warning that failure to provide a satisfactory response could result in termination.
A spokesperson for PIA stated, “Your action has affected the reputation of the national airline, PIA.” The airline emphasized its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding employee misconduct, asserting that “any illegal actions by employees are unacceptable, and we do not treat those involved in illegal activities with leniency.”
As the investigation continues, Majeed remains in the custody of Customs authorities, who are probing the circumstances surrounding the smuggling attempt. The case underscores the ongoing challenges of illegal trafficking at airports and the stringent measures being implemented to combat such activities.
