PM Shehbaz Sharif Approves Digital Transformation of FBR for Transparent and Modern Tax System

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the establishment of a modern and world-class digital ecosystem in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), aiming to revolutionize Pakistan’s tax system through real-time monitoring, transparency, and integration. The initiative includes hiring internationally recognized experts to ensure timely and effective implementation.

Chairing a high-level review meeting on FBR reforms, the Prime Minister was briefed on the progress of linking FBR’s data to a centralized system and building a digital ecosystem that will allow real-time monitoring of the entire value chain — from raw materials to consumer purchase.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb and Ahad Cheema, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, FBR Chairman, Chief Coordinator Musharraf Zaidi, economic experts, and senior officials.

PM Shehbaz emphasized that the ongoing reforms have already started showing positive signs for the economy, but stressed that merely digitizing processes is not enough. Instead, he called for the creation of a complete and integrated digital ecosystem that meets international standards and fulfills modern-day governance and economic needs.

“All stages — raw material preparation, import, manufacturing, and consumer sales — must be digitally interconnected,” the Prime Minister stated. “The system must be robust and reliable enough to enable real-time monitoring of the value chain.”

He added that the centralized data collected from this new ecosystem should play a pivotal role in shaping economic policy and strategic national decisions.

Highlighting the importance of tax net expansion, PM Shehbaz noted that reducing the tax burden on the common citizen is not possible without formalizing the informal economy and bringing undocumented sectors into the system.

This bold step marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s pursuit of a transparent, tech-enabled, and inclusive tax infrastructure that supports sustainable economic growth.
