During the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held crucial meetings with top global leaders, including Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Ajaypal Singh Banga, President of the World Bank.
In his meeting with Georgieva, Prime Minister Shehbaz acknowledged the IMF’s critical support in finalising the recent $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Pakistan, which was approved on Wednesday. He expressed the government’s commitment to implementing institutional reforms and fostering private sector growth, while also appreciating the IMF’s technical assistance that has enhanced Pakistan’s economic governance.
The IMF's Managing Director reiterated the organization's support for Pakistan, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining macroeconomic stability and promoting inclusive, sustainable growth. Both leaders also addressed the urgent need for financing for climate change adaptation, with Shehbaz committing to raising this issue at the upcoming IMF annual meetings in October.
In a separate meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan's dedication to fully implementing international conventions related to the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP Plus). The discussion covered various topics, including bilateral relations and global issues of mutual concern. Shehbaz congratulated von der Leyen on her re-election and highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue to achieve shared goals.
Additionally, the Prime Minister met with World Bank President Ajaypal Singh Banga, where he expressed appreciation for the Bank's continuous support in economic reforms aimed at poverty reduction and infrastructure development. The Prime Minister outlined the government's efforts in policy, administrative, and organisational reforms, and underscored the need for innovative financing solutions for development projects, including water management and energy sectors.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to achieving Pakistan's development goals in alignment with Vision 2025 and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
