PM Shehbaz Sharif Extends Tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu Amid Criticism Over Chiefs' Extensions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a one-year extension for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, the 16th Chief of Air Staff of Pakistan. The decision, however, comes amidst criticism and controversy surrounding the extensions granted to force’s chiefs.

While the official announcement of the extension has not been made, sources confirm that ACM Zaheer Babar will continue in his role for another year. The prime minister had sent the advisory of the extension to President Asif Ali Zardari, who granted the extension after approval.

ACM Zaheer Babar, a four-star air force officer, assumed command of the Pakistan Air Force on March 19, 2021, succeeding ACM Mujahid Anwar Khan. Despite his extensive experience and decorated military career, ACM Sidhu's extension has drawn criticism due to ongoing debates over force’ chiefs' tenure extensions.

The decision to extend ACM Sidhu's tenure was made after his recent meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the meeting, they discussed various professional matters concerning the Pakistan Air Force. However, no official statement has been issued regarding the extension, adding to the controversy.

Critics argue that the practice of granting extensions to armed forces chiefs undermines institutional reforms and perpetuates a lack of rotation and fresh leadership within the military hierarchy. The extensions have raised concerns about the concentration of power and influence in the hands of a few individuals, potentially impacting decision-making processes and organizational dynamics within the armed forces.

As the debate over armed forces chiefs' extensions continues, there is a growing call for transparency and accountability in the process of appointing and extending the tenures of top military officials. The controversy surrounding ACM Sidhu's extension highlights the need for greater scrutiny and oversight to ensure the effectiveness and integrity of military leadership in Pakistan.
