PTI KP Lawmakers Clash Over February 8 Lockdown, Shahid Khattak Voices Opposition

Tensions within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa parliamentary party came to light following a meeting at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad on February 2, sources revealed.

During the meeting, Member of National Assembly (MNA) Shahid Khattak opposed the planned February 8 lockdown and road closures, warning that such measures could adversely affect the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “The people of the province have given us a mandate. There is no point in protesting here. The lockdown and road closures in KP will create problems for us,” Khattak reportedly said.

MNA Atif Khan supported Khattak’s position during the discussion. Khattak also suggested compiling a list of party members who did not participate in protests outside Adiala Jail, highlighting internal divisions regarding strategy and participation.

PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Junaid Akbar expressed his frustration, citing pressures from party workers. “Who should we convince? Aleema Khan, the workers, and now you? If something has to be done, then all the assembly members resign,” Akbar reportedly said during the meeting.

Speaking to Geo News, Shahid Khattak emphasized that the meeting allowed all members to voice their opinions. “I had said in the meeting that the lockdown will cause difficulties for the people here, while PTI KP President Junaid Akbar avoided giving a stand on this issue,” he noted.

The meeting exposes a growing rift within PTI’s provincial leadership ahead of the planned protests and lockdown, reflecting challenges in balancing party directives with public welfare considerations.
