POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Barrister Gauhar, Omar Ayub Khan, Shibli Faraz, and Salman Akram Raja, expressed serious concerns about the ongoing political situation in the country, particularly regarding the February 8 election results and the state of the judiciary.
Omar Ayub, the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, strongly criticized the government and judiciary for what he termed the arbitrary treatment of PTI’s leadership. He pointed out that Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, and other PTI leaders are currently imprisoned under unconstitutional conditions. Ayub emphasized that these leaders, who are political prisoners, are being denied basic jail facilities as per the jail manual and are not receiving proper legal treatment.
He further expressed dissatisfaction with the rigged election results that saw PTI’s 180 seats in the National Assembly being seized. The PTI leaders believe that the government, which they say was formed through a fake mandate, has failed to deliver on promises of economic stability, leading to an economic crisis and widespread inflation in the country.
Barrister Gauhar, the Chairman of PTI, voiced his concerns over the 26th Constitutional Amendment, claiming that the government had acted arbitrarily, disregarding PTI’s position and failing to protect the people’s mandate. Gauhar demanded that the amendment be reviewed as soon as possible by the judiciary, calling it a constitutional responsibility of the Election Commission.
The PTI leadership further accused the government of deliberately avoiding negotiations with the party, even after Imran Khan’s offer for talks. Gauhar emphasized that despite the challenges, there is still an opportunity to make wise decisions for the benefit of the people and the country.
Shibli Faraz, another PTI leader, pointed to the unstable political climate since February 8, attributing it to the lack of transparent elections. He argued that political stability can only be achieved through fair elections, which he claims have yet to take place in Pakistan. Faraz also criticized the government for imposing rejected leaders on the country after stealing the people's mandate.
Lastly, Salman Akram Raja, PTI’s General Secretary, called for immediate action from the Supreme Court to address the electoral rigging that occurred during the February 8 elections. He demanded that the discrepancies in the Election Commission’s records be investigated and that justice be served.
At the conclusion of the press conference, PTI leaders expressed their determination to continue fighting for transparent elections and the respect of the public mandate.
