POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has reached out to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) to discuss recent amendments approved by the National Assembly and Senate, which pertain to increasing the number of Supreme Court judges and extending the tenure of the country’s top service chiefs.
According to insider sources, a high-level PTI delegation led by Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali is scheduled to meet Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence today. The agenda includes deliberations on the newly passed bills, which Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani signed into law yesterday.
The meeting signifies a potential shift in the political dynamics of opposition parties, as PTI and JUI-F may jointly strategize on how to address these sweeping legislative changes. Sources say the two parties aim to formulate a shared action plan, preparing for the implications these amendments could have on the country's judiciary and defense leadership.
Yesterday’s approval by both houses of Parliament increased the tenure of the service chiefs and expanded the Supreme Court bench, sparking discussions across the political spectrum. PTI has voiced concerns regarding the speed at which these amendments were passed, highlighting the need for more consultation and parliamentary debate.
This high-stakes meeting is expected to signal the opposition’s next steps, especially regarding checks and balances on such critical amendments. The developments from today’s meeting could pave the way for stronger cooperation between opposition factions as they navigate the legislative and political landscape in the coming months.
