PTI Protests in Islamabad Turn Deadly: Clash Leaves Six Dead, Hundreds Missing

Islamabad witnessed a day of intense clashes between PTI protesters and security forces, culminating in the retreat of PTI’s leadership from the Red Zone early Wednesday. The violence claimed six lives, including a policeman and three Rangers personnel, while hundreds are reported missing or injured.

Protesters and authorities have traded accusations over the casualties. PTI leaders allege that security forces opened fire on unarmed demonstrators, claiming up to 20 fatalities. The government has categorically denied these claims, with Rawalpindi police stating they exercised maximum restraint to avoid injuries or fatalities among protesters.

The PTI has alleged on social media that hospitals are overwhelmed with injured protesters and accused authorities of concealing the extent of the violence. The party also shared lists of missing and detained workers from Peshawar constituencies.

Meanwhile, police officials held a press conference to counter these allegations, asserting that protesters attacked them with firearms and makeshift weapons. Rawalpindi RPO Babar Sarfraz Alpa revealed that 170 police officers were injured during the clashes, with 25 in critical condition.

"Despite facing violence, including direct firing from protesters, the police refrained from returning fire to prevent collateral damage," RPO Alpa stated.

Protesters also reportedly set fire to police vehicles and erected barricades, disrupting daily life in the capital. Authorities have registered multiple cases and arrested over 1,100 individuals, including Afghan nationals.

As tensions persist, both sides continue to present conflicting narratives, leaving the public grappling with questions about accountability and justice.
