Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Approves Agriculture Tube Wells Solarisation Project

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the approval of a significant agriculture tube wells solarisation project aimed at enhancing sustainability and reducing irrigation costs for farmers. The project is expected to shift approximately 7,000 tube wells to solar energy in its first phase, with plans to extend the initiative to 10,000 tube wells in the second phase.

Project Details

Eligibility and Costs: The solarisation project will benefit farmers who own at least 25 acres of agricultural land. Under the project, the government will cover 67% of the costs, leaving farmers responsible for just 33% of the expenses related to the conversion of their tube wells to solar power.

Phases of Implementation:

First Phase: Approximately 7,000 tube wells will be converted to solar energy.

Second Phase: With federal government collaboration, an additional 10,000 tube wells are slated for solarisation.

Cost Savings: The transition to solar energy is projected to significantly reduce operational costs. Currently, running a tube well on diesel costs around Rs. 3,000 per acre, while electricity costs approximately Rs. 1,500 per acre. Solar energy will bring this down to just Rs. 50 per acre.

Additional Directives

Support for Vegetable Farmers: Maryam Nawaz has directed the creation of special packages tailored for vegetable farmers. She emphasized the need for a sustainable and effective system to manage the supply of essential vegetables like onions and tomatoes.

Farmers’ Welfare: In her address, Chief Minister Nawaz highlighted that Punjab’s prosperity and development are closely tied to the welfare of its farmers. She urged the need for ongoing support and initiatives to ensure the agricultural sector thrives.

Impact

This initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on farmers and promote sustainable farming practices through the use of renewable energy. The shift to solar-powered tube wells is expected to improve irrigation efficiency and lower costs, contributing to the overall growth and development of Punjab's agricultural sector.
