Punjab CTD Arrests 33 Suspected Terrorists in Month-long Counterterrorism Operations

The Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) announced on Saturday that it had arrested 33 suspected terrorists during 475 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) conducted throughout the province over the past month.

These operations come in response to heightened security concerns across Pakistan, which witnessed an alarming surge in terrorist activities. According to data from the Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), there were 59 terrorist attacks nationwide in August, compared to 38 in July.

In a press release, the CTD revealed that during the month-long operations, 475 suspects were interrogated, leading to the seizure of explosives, weapons, and banned literature. The arrested individuals were linked to defunct terrorist organizations, including Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Islamic State (Daish), Al-Qaida, Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, and others.

The operations were carried out in various districts of Punjab, with eight suspects apprehended in Lahore alone. The department also registered 32 First Information Reports (FIRs) under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 (ATA).

During the raids, the CTD recovered explosives, weapons, and banned materials, including hand grenades, detonators, and books from proscribed organizations. Additionally, combing operations conducted this week, in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, led to the arrest of 1,431 suspects.

This intensified counterterrorism campaign reflects the urgency of addressing rising militancy. The Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, reiterated the nation’s commitment to eliminating terrorism during a Defence Day ceremony in Rawalpindi.

The operations underscore the CTD’s ongoing efforts to thwart terrorist activities and maintain peace and security in Pakistan.
