At least four people were injured when armed robbers opened fire on vehicles traveling along the Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M5) near Bhong Sharif in Rahim Yar Khan, police confirmed on Thursday.
According to eyewitness accounts, the robbers intercepted vehicles, firing at passengers and injuring four individuals before kidnapping several others. “The robbers kidnapped my brother and son while leaving me behind,” one victim told Geo News, highlighting the traumatic ordeal faced by families caught in the attack.
Police said that while some passengers were taken away by the assailants, others were left at the scene. The injured were shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Following the incident, the Motorway Police and Rangers launched patrols along the affected stretch of the highway. A Motorway Police spokesperson later confirmed that the Multan-Sukkur Motorway M5 had been reopened for traffic.
“The M5 is completely safe for travel, and patrolling has been increased,” the spokesperson stated. Motorists were urged to contact the Motorway Police Helpline 130 in case of emergencies or for assistance.
The incident has raised concerns among travelers and locals regarding the safety of highways in southern Punjab, where sporadic reports of highway robberies and armed incidents have surfaced in recent years. Authorities said search operations are underway to recover the abducted passengers and apprehend the culprits.
