An audit report has exposed alleged corruption and financial irregularities exceeding Rs12 billion in the Sindh Health Department, including the shocking theft of cancer medicines worth Rs360 million from Dr. Rath Civil Hospital.
The report, covering the financial operations of the caretaker government (nine and a half months) and the current Sindh government (two months), highlights systemic issues, mismanagement, and a lack of accountability within the department.
According to the audit, the theft of cancer medicines occurred in 2023, with hospital staff, including a staff nurse and a dispenser, being directly implicated. The hospital superintendent confirmed the theft, raising serious concerns about internal controls and drug storage procedures at the hospital.
Despite the gravity of the incident, the report criticizes the hospital administration for failing to refer the case to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) or the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The audit team has formally recommended a detailed inquiry and urgent referral to investigative bodies.
The case has raised alarms about the vulnerability of public health assets, especially in a province grappling with limited medical resources and high disease burdens.
Healthcare activists and watchdog groups have called for immediate transparency and accountability, urging the Sindh government and federal institutions to act swiftly.
“This is not just a financial scandal — it’s a criminal act against cancer patients who depend on free treatment,” said a Karachi-based health rights advocate. “The silence of the authorities so far is deeply concerning.”
The Sindh Health Department has yet to issue an official response.
