A tragic incident unfolded across the Pakistan-India border after a young Pakistani couple who left home following a domestic dispute were found dead in India’s Jaisalmer desert. The couple, identified as 17-year-old Ravi Kumar, son of Dewan Kumar, and Shanti Bai, daughter of Galio, hailed from Ghulam Hussain Laghari village in Mirpur Mathelo, Sindh.
According to family sources, the couple had left their home a week ago after an argument. Ravi reportedly had a disagreement with his father over farm-related responsibilities. The two packed their belongings and left on a motorcycle. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned near Noor Pir, close to the Pakistan-India border.
The family last tracked Ravi's mobile phone to the Kenjho desert region, but all contact was lost thereafter.
A week later, Indian authorities recovered two decomposed bodies in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan — just across the border. The deceased were identified via Pakistani identity cards and a mobile phone with a Pakistani SIM found on them. According to Indian media, the bodies were estimated to be 6 to 7 days old.
Cause of Death: Starvation and Dehydration Suspected
Ravi Kumar’s family believes the couple, unfamiliar with the harsh desert terrain, likely died of hunger and thirst after becoming lost in the arid region.
“They were not used to desert life. It’s possible they wandered for hours without food or water,” said a grieving relative.
Appeal for Repatriation
Ravi’s father, Dewan Kumar, confirmed the identification based on news circulating in Indian and Pakistani media and appealed for help:
“I make a living by traveling. I beg the authorities to help bring back the bodies of my son and daughter-in-law.”
Cross-Border Mystery
It remains unclear how the couple managed to cross the heavily guarded Pakistan-India border, particularly in such a volatile and closely monitored area. Authorities on both sides have yet to release details on whether the border was breached intentionally or if the crossing was accidental.
The incident has raised concerns about border security, humanitarian coordination, and cross-border repatriation protocols in such rare and tragic cases.
Local authorities in Mirpur Mathelo are reportedly coordinating with federal officials to seek assistance from Indian counterparts for body repatriation and formal investigation.
