At least five people lost their lives and four others were seriously injured after a pickup vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Para Chamkani Gondal, Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Friday morning, police and local authorities confirmed.
According to Kurram Deputy Commissioner Ashfaq Khan, the ill-fated vehicle was en route to Sadda Bazaar from Spin Ghar Manro when it lost control on a narrow, winding mountain road and skidded off a sharp bend, falling into a ravine.
“The vehicle lost control on a narrow and dangerous turn and fell off the road,” DC Khan told Dawn.com. “Five people died on the spot while four others sustained critical injuries.”
Victims Identified
The deceased were identified as:
· Gul Wali, son of Abdul Hanan (driver)
· Naimatullah, son of Gul Khan
· Naseeb, son of Hamad Jan (all from Manro)
· Dolly Khan, son of Islam
· Riazuddin, son of Zahiruddin (both from Kimal Baza Zangi)
The injured were shifted to Sadda Hospital with the help of locals, who began rescue efforts immediately after the accident occurred. Authorities said the condition of some of the injured is critical.
Community Response
In the absence of formal rescue teams in the remote mountainous area, residents of Para Chamkani quickly organized a relief effort, helping evacuate victims from the wreckage and transporting the injured to the hospital.
“The spirit and bravery of the locals were commendable,” said a local official. “They didn’t wait — they acted quickly to save lives.”
A Pattern of Tragedy
Mountainous terrain, poor infrastructure, and lack of enforcement of traffic safety regulations continue to contribute to frequent fatal accidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Just a day earlier, five people died in a collision between a truck and a car on Chashma Road in Dera Ismail Khan.
Other recent accidents include:
· May 1: Eight family members killed as car plunged into a ravine in Lower Kohistan
· April 15: Ten killed, nine injured as trailer crushed a van in Karak
· April 7: Five died when a three-wheeler fell into a canal in Swabi
Authorities are once again under pressure to improve road safety measures, especially in high-risk areas like Kurram and Kohistan, where steep gradients and blind curves present constant danger.
Call for Action
Local residents and officials alike are urging the government to install protective barriers, widen risky roads, and launch awareness campaigns to prevent further tragedies in the region.
