Two Women Killed as Sixth Floor Collapses in Karachi’s Ghani Mansion

Tragedy struck again in Karachi’s District South as a portion of a six-storey building, Ghani Mansion, collapsed near Bilal Masjid Peshawari Hotel in Saddar, killing two women and injuring three others on Wednesday.

According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaanul Haseeb Khan, the collapse occurred while labourers were working on the roof of the sixth floor, which was in a dilapidated state. “Two women have died in the accident, while more than two others are reported to have been injured,” he said. Rescue operations have since concluded.

DIGP South Asad Raza confirmed the casualties and revealed that the top floor had caved in onto the fifth floor. The victims were taken to Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital.

“The deceased women were sisters. Their daughters are among the injured and are being given medical assistance,” said DIG Raza.

A Recurring Crisis

This incident comes just two weeks after a catastrophic collapse in Lyari’s Lea Market killed 27 people, prompting widespread alarm over Karachi’s deteriorating building safety standards.

In response to that incident, Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani held an emergency press conference and disclosed that 588 buildings had been declared hazardous citywide456 of them in District South, and 107 in Lyari alone.

The Sindh government also suspended the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and formed a committee to identify and act on dangerous structures.

As part of those efforts, 44 dilapidated buildings, including 10 protected heritage sites, have recently been vacated in the South and East districts. Of these, 68 buildings have been declared “highly dilapidated” and are slated for demolition in the first phase.
