King Charles’s New Year honours list for 2024, published on Monday, has named over 1,200 individuals who have made significant contributions across various fields such as politics, sport, arts, and community service. Among those honoured are London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson, and former England football manager Gareth Southgate.
Sadiq Khan, one of the most high-profile politicians of Asian origin in Britain, has been recognised for his political and public service. Khan, who was re-elected as London Mayor for a third term in 2024, has faced challenges, including criticism over crime rates and the city’s housing crisis. Nevertheless, his impact in public service has earned him recognition on this prestigious list.
Keely Hodgkinson, who clinched an Olympic gold medal at the Paris Olympics, was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Hodgkinson’s recognition reflects her achievements in sport, adding to her remarkable career as one of Britain’s brightest athletic stars.
Gareth Southgate, who led the England football team to two consecutive European Championship finals, was knighted for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the sport. Southgate, who stepped down as national team manager in July, has been lauded not only for his success on the field but also for his leadership off it.
The New Year honours list has been a tradition since at least 1890 and aims to recognise individuals who have made a substantial impact in their respective fields, both celebrated public figures and those whose work may often go unrecognised. The honours range from knighthoods and damehoods to Members, Commanders, and Officers of the Order of the British Empire (MBE, CBE, OBE).
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his gratitude for the “unsung heroes” on the list, praising their extraordinary contributions to communities across the country. He stated, “Each and every day, ordinary people go out and do extraordinary things for their communities.”
Other notable recipients of the honours include former MI5 director general Ken McCallum, who will receive a knighthood for his services to national security. Business leaders, including former Rolls-Royce CEO Warren East and ex-HSBC CEO Noel Quinn, were also honoured with knighthoods. Additionally, actress Sarah Lancashire, actress Carey Mulligan, and TV personality Alan Titchmarsh were named Commanders of the British Empire (CBE).
In the realm of literature, children’s author Jacqueline Wilson was awarded a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire, and Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro received a Companion of Honour, a rare and prestigious honour granted to only 65 individuals at any given time.
A special mention goes to those who have campaigned for justice, including Lee Castleton, Jo Hamilton, Christopher Head, and Seema Misra, who were all recognised with an OBE. The list also honours four victims of the Horizon IT scandal, where faulty software led to the wrongful conviction of hundreds of sub-postmasters for fraud, theft, and false accounting.
The New Year honours list serves as a reminder of the countless individuals who dedicate their time, effort, and resources to bettering society in often overlooked ways. It highlights the importance of both public recognition and gratitude for those who make a positive difference in the lives of others.
