SC Disposes of Petition Challenging Government’s Constitutional Package After Withdrawal

The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday dismissed a petition challenging the government’s proposed Constitutional Package after the petitioners withdrew their plea.

The package includes amendments that experts warn could limit judicial independence, particularly by restricting the Supreme Court to handling only civil and criminal cases.

The petition, led by former Supreme Court Bar Association President Abid Shahid Zuberi, was withdrawn by Advocate Hamid Khan during a hearing presided over by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

Despite initial objections from the court, the plea was ultimately dismissed at the request of the petitioners.
