Sindh Government Initiates Judicial Inquiry into Dr. Shahnawaz Kanbhar's Death in Police Custody Amid Ongoing Violence Concerns

Karachi: The Sindh government has taken a significant step by writing to the registrar of the Sindh High Court, requesting a judicial inquiry into the killing of Umarkot resident Dr. Shahnawaz Kanbhar while in police custody. In a letter from Ijaz Bhatti, Section Officer of the Home Department, the government informed that a case of blasphemy (FIR 2024/42) was filed against Dr. Shahnawaz, who was allegedly killed in a police encounter on September 18 at the Sindh police station.

Two additional FIRs (2024/45 and 2024/46) were filed against him, and his body was later discovered in his native village. The letter also mentioned the formation of a committee consisting of three police officers to investigate the incident, while a murder case (FIR 2024/47) was filed on behalf of his relatives. The Sindh government has emphasized the necessity of a judicial inquiry to uncover the facts and identify the police officers involved.

In a related development, renowned writer Jami Chandio, a victim of police violence during the Tolerance March, has refused a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. Chandio expressed that the meeting would not address the real issues and demanded the withdrawal of FIRs against those who participated in the march, legal action against the police involved in the violence, and a judicial commission for a transparent investigation into Dr. Shahnawaz's death.

Meanwhile, the police committee headed by DIG Fida Mastoi is investigating the police violence during the Tolerance March, with questions raised about how the participants breached barriers to reach the Karachi Press Club. Efforts are reportedly being made to shield DIG South Asad Raza from accountability.

In Umarkot, no action has been taken against Maulvi Ahmad Shahani, an Arabic teacher accused of inciting people to burn Dr. Shahnawaz’s body. Despite repeated requests for a report from the headmaster of Janhero High School, no action has yet been initiated against him.

As tensions mount in Sindh, calls for justice and accountability continue to grow, highlighting the urgent need for reforms in the policing and legal system.
