Security Tightened at Rawalpindi Detention Center for Afghan Nationals

As Pakistani authorities continue operations to detain Afghan nationals without proper documentation, security has been intensified at the detention center near Golra Mor in Rawalpindi.

The Pakistani government has set March 31 as the final deadline for Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) holders to leave voluntarily. However, law enforcement agencies have been detaining undocumented Afghan refugees residing in Rawalpindi and Islamabad as part of an ongoing crackdown.

Deportations and Detentions Continue

Currently, Afghan nationals held in Rawalpindi are being kept at a camp near Golra Mor. Those with valid documents are being released with orders to vacate the twin cities, while those without proof of residence are being deported immediately.

According to security officials, Rawalpindi police have detained approximately 820 Afghan nationals over the past week. So far, 114 have been deported, while 140 remain in detention due to a temporary halt in deportation caused by the closure of the Afghan border.

Enhanced Security Measures

In response to security concerns, authorities have declared the area around the detention camp a ‘red zone’ and deployed 40 police officers under the supervision of an SP. Police teams are operating in three shifts to ensure round-the-clock security.

Additionally, security measures include:

  • Installation of CCTV cameras for surveillance
  • Deployment of barbed wire and additional lighting around the camp
  • A strict ban on mobile phone use inside the facility
  • Maintenance of detailed records of every detained Afghan national

Verification and Relocation

The Rawalpindi police are also verifying Afghan nationals living or working in the city. Employers and landlords have been required to submit affidavits, ensuring that all Afghan refugees leave the city before the government’s deadline.

Intelligence agencies are actively monitoring the relocation process, while search operations continue across Rawalpindi to identify and detain any remaining undocumented foreigners. In high-risk areas, bomb disposal squads with sniffer dogs are being deployed to ensure security.

As Pakistan moves forward with its deportation plan, the fate of thousands of Afghan nationals remains uncertain, especially with the border closure delaying the process.
