Senior Citizen Dies After Falling into Open Drain in Karachi’s Korangi Area

A senior citizen lost his life after falling into an open drain in the Korangi Zaman Town area on Wednesday evening, highlighting once again the dangers posed by uncovered drains and the lack of basic safety infrastructure in the city.

According to rescue sources, the incident occurred around 6:30pm near the Korangi Kabaddi Ground. The victim, identified by police as Kale Khan, was walking in the dark with luggage loaded on his bicycle when he accidentally fell into the drain. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced, confirming the sequence of events.

Police officials said that initial investigations suggest the accident occurred due to the absence of a protective wall or safety barrier around the drain. The deceased was a resident of Zaman Town Sector 34-3 and was living in a rented house with his children.

Kale Khan is survived by two sons and two daughters. His funeral prayers were offered later, and he was laid to rest in the local cemetery.

Local residents expressed anger and frustration over the incident, stating that they had repeatedly complained to the relevant authorities about the uncovered drain located in front of a centre and school for blind and special children. Despite multiple requests, they said, no cleaning or safety measures were taken.

Residents demanded immediate action from civic authorities to install protective walls and ensure proper lighting and maintenance in the area to prevent further tragedies. The incident has once again raised serious questions about municipal negligence and public safety in Karachi.
