A senior Russian general was killed on Monday morning in a car bombing in southern Moscow, marking the latest high-profile assassination linked to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The blast occurred just hours after separate talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegates in Miami aimed at negotiating a potential end to the four-year conflict.
Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, 56, head of the Russian General Staff’s training department, died when a bomb placed under his parked car detonated in a residential area. Witnesses described a loud explosion that destroyed a white Kia SUV, blowing out its doors and back window. Local residents reported being shaken by the blast.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said it was examining multiple leads, including possible involvement by “Ukrainian special services.” Sarvarov had previously fought in Russia’s North Caucasus campaigns in the 1990s and commanded Russian forces in Syria during 2015-16.
The killing follows a series of attacks targeting Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin figures. Notable incidents include the deaths of General Yaroslav Moskalik near Moscow in April, Igor Kirillov in December 2024 via a booby-trapped scooter, and Maxim Fomin, a military blogger, in 2023.
The assassination comes amid intensified US efforts to mediate peace in the Ukraine war. Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov and US special envoy Steve Witkoff reported “productive” talks in Miami over the weekend, while Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev also participated in discussions that included Jared Kushner.
An initial 28-point plan proposed by the US reportedly met Moscow’s core demands, raising concerns in Kyiv and European capitals. Ukraine has expressed scepticism over Russia’s intentions, citing ongoing demands for large territorial concessions in eastern Ukraine.
The Kremlin confirmed that President Vladimir Putin had been informed of Sarvarov’s death. Meanwhile, Russian authorities denied reports suggesting ambitions to recreate the Soviet Union or expand further into Eastern Europe, following US intelligence claims.
The incident underscores the continuing risk to Russian military personnel inside Russia and highlights the ongoing tension even as diplomatic negotiations attempt to resolve the conflict.
