Seven Indicted for Heinous Murder of Sam Nordquist: A Case That Shook the Nation

Seven adults have been indicted for the murder of 24-year-old Sam Nordquist, who was abducted, beaten, and sexually assaulted for weeks before his body was hidden, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Nordquist had traveled from Minnesota to New York to meet an online contact—one of the individuals now facing the state's most serious charge of first-degree murder, which carries a possible life sentence without parole.

His family last heard from him in January, and he was last seen in early February. Prosecutors revealed that two children were also forced to participate in Nordquist’s abuse, describing a horrifying scene where he was brutalized in a Canandaigua motel.

"Sam was beaten, assaulted, sexually abused, starved, held captive, and we cannot make sense of that,” said Ontario County Assistant District Attorney Kelly Wolford. She confirmed that hate crime charges were not filed, as there was no legal basis to link the crime to Nordquist’s gender or race.

Disturbing details of his captivity have surfaced, with reports that he was forced to eat feces, drink urine, and obey commands like a dog. The case has sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community, with activists demanding justice.

“We refuse to let Sam’s story fade into silence,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president of GLAAD. “We demand accountability, justice, and a world where transgender people are safe, respected, and able to live freely.”

The case unfolds as the U.S. sees a rise in anti-trans violence, with GLAAD reporting over 800 anti-trans incidents since June 2022. Activists warn that political rhetoric and policy shifts—such as Trump’s executive orders erasing trans rights—are fueling a climate of fear and violence.

As the legal battle continues, the LGBTQ+ community and allies stand firm, ensuring Sam Nordquist’s story is not forgotten.
