TRADE & ECONOMY

Beijing/Islamabad – Pakistan and China have reaffirmed their all-weather strategic partnership, pledging to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, defence, and infrastructure. The commitment came during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State Summit, held from August 31 to September 1.
According to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), the two leaders underscored that the Pakistan-China relationship was “unique and unparalleled” and should be further reflected in enhanced cooperation across sectors. They also discussed regional and global developments, agreeing to maintain close coordination on international issues of mutual concern.
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to advance the next phase of the upgraded China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which includes five new corridors aimed at bolstering connectivity, industrial growth, and regional integration. He also congratulated President Xi on the success of the SCO summit in Tianjin and extended felicitations on the 80th anniversary of the World Anti-Fascist War.
Lauding Xi’s “visionary and transformational leadership,” the prime minister said Pakistan took pride in China’s achievements on its path toward modernisation and progress, pledging Islamabad’s full readiness to partner with Beijing in this journey.
PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude for China’s steadfast support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and socio-economic development, stressing the significance of CPEC as the flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that continues to deepen the Pakistan-China community with a shared future.
The prime minister also welcomed China’s initiatives on global governance, development, security, and civilisation, noting these would serve the “collective global good” by promoting peace, stability, and sustainable growth worldwide.
President Xi assured that China would continue to support Pakistan’s economic growth and development, particularly in priority sectors under the second phase of CPEC.
In conclusion, PM Shehbaz extended a “most cordial invitation” to President Xi to visit Pakistan next year, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Pakistan-China diplomatic relations.
