Former Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed was stopped from traveling abroad at Islamabad International Airport on Wednesday, despite a court order permitting his departure.
According to reports, the Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi Bench had directed authorities to remove Sheikh Rashid’s name from the Passport Control List and the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL). However, despite the legal clearance, the former minister was not allowed to board his flight.
In a video statement, Sheikh Rashid said that Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan had granted him permission to travel for Umrah, and copies of the court’s written order were sent to all relevant institutions.
“The court gave clear instructions that there should be no objection, but when I reached the airport, I was stopped and told that I cannot go,” Rashid said.
He announced that he would approach the court again to file a contempt of court petition, adding that the incident reflected a breakdown in the implementation of judicial orders.
“In a country where the High Court’s orders are not followed, one has no choice but to look toward the sky,” he remarked. “Allah will make me perform Umrah. Those responsible will have to be ashamed of their actions.”
The incident has sparked renewed debate over the enforcement of judicial rulings and the government’s adherence to court directives regarding travel restrictions.
