TRADE & ECONOMY
The Sindh government has announced plans to allocate 52,000 acres of land under the Green Initiative project to promote corporate farming. Among the targeted areas are 10,000 acres in Kachhi, including the scenic Gorakh Hill Station in the Dadu district.
Preparations for the allocation are underway, with 5,600 acres reportedly leased to an influential individual. An outline has been developed for the remaining land, sparking debate over transparency in the allocation process.
Key Developments
A survey team was expected to arrive to assess the land and conduct a detailed survey. However, the team’s arrival has been delayed despite prior arrangements. The schedule, issued by the Revenue Department on December 31, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Dadu to ensure security and logistical support for the visitors.
The Deputy Commissioner issued additional instructions to local officials, including the police and irrigation department, to remain on alert for the team's arrival. DSP Johi Nazir Mallah confirmed the readiness of the police, stating they are awaiting further updates on the team’s visit.
Controversy Surrounding Gorakh Hill Station
While the Deputy Commissioner Dadu denied claims that land in Gorakh Hill Station or other areas in Kachhi was allocated, official documents tell a different story. A letter from January 1 references the allotment of 52,700 acres for the Green Initiative, including land from three Dehs in Kachhi: Took Qasim, Son of Sulaiman I, and Son of Sulaiman II.
Sources indicate that maps and area measurement plans have already been submitted to the Revenue Department, with Gorakh Hill Station included in the proposed allocation. Critics have raised concerns over the inclusion of areas with significant oil and gas reserves, such as the mountainous belt of Kachhi and Gaj Dam.
Transparency and Accountability
The decision to lease 5,600 acres to a prominent individual has drawn criticism, with observers questioning the transparency of the allocation process. Opposition leaders and local activists are demanding that the government provide clarity on the criteria used for these leases and ensure that public assets are not exploited.
Green Initiative Goals
The Green Initiative aims to modernize agriculture and boost economic growth through corporate farming. However, the allocation of vast tracts of land has sparked a debate over the balance between development and safeguarding public resources.
Next Steps
The delayed survey has added uncertainty to the project’s timeline. Local officials are now awaiting a revised schedule for the team’s visit to finalize the land assessment.
Public Concerns
Critics argue that the government must ensure fairness and transparency in the allocation process to prevent potential misuse of public assets. Environmentalists have also raised alarms over the potential ecological impact of corporate farming on sensitive areas like Gorakh Hill Station.
