POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The Sindh government has announced a new initiative to curb cheating in examinations, introducing a watermarking system to trace any paper leaks. Minister for Universities and Educational Boards Muhammad Ismail Rahoo confirmed that those involved in malpractice will be immediately identified through the new system.
The announcement came during a high-level meeting chaired by Rahoo, attended by Secretary of Universities Muhammad Abbas Baloch and chairmen of all educational boards in Sindh. Discussions focused on exam security, furniture, drinking water, electricity, and other logistical preparations for the upcoming academic year examinations.
Examination schedule and logistics
Exams across Sindh will proceed as scheduled, Rahoo said. A total of 1,353,258 students from grades 9 to 12 will participate, with over 1,600 examination centres set up across the province:
- Karachi: Grades 9 & 10 exams start April 7; Grades 11 & 12 from April 25.
- Sukkur Division: Grades 9 & 10 from March 30; Grades 11 & 12 from April 15.
E-marking will be implemented in Sukkur and Shaheed Benazirabad divisions for all papers, while Larkana Board will initially conduct eight papers (grades 9–12) under e-marking. In Karachi, all grade 9 papers and two matriculation papers will use e-marking.
Measures for transparency and discipline
Rahoo also announced the creation of a provincial-level complaint cell at the secretary boards’ office to ensure monitoring of centres and vigilance teams. Strict action will be taken against board chairmen if paper leaks occur.
The minister directed that drinking water, furniture, and other facility issues at exam centres be addressed immediately. He also urged coordination with electricity providers, including K-Electric and Hyderabad Electric Supply Company, to avoid load-shedding during exams.
Bringing mobile phones to examination centres will be banned under Section 144. Rahoo stressed that all resources will be mobilised to guarantee a transparent, timely, and fair examination process across Sindh.
