Sindh to Form Narcotics Force, Cut Down on ATC Courts: Lanjar

In a major policy shift, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar announced that the provincial government is taking decisive steps to curb drug trafficking by forming a Sindh Narcotics Force and setting up special narcotics courts, while reducing the number of anti-terrorism courts in the province.

Speaking on the floor of the Sindh Assembly, the Home Minister made a startling revelation that some police officers themselves are involved in the drug trade, terming them “black sheep” and warning of strict action against them.

“We are forming our own anti-narcotics force. No one involved in drug smuggling, including officials, will be spared,” Lanjar stated.

Restructuring the Court System

Lanjar highlighted that terrorism cases have dropped significantly in Sindh, leading the government to reduce the number of anti-terrorism courts from 20 to just 7, and redirect judicial focus to drug-related crimes through new anti-narcotics courts.

“Karachi has been specifically targeted with drugs. We want to dismantle this network and prosecute dealers swiftly,” he added.

Police Reforms and Recruitment

The minister also spoke about the state of police recruitment and modernization. While acknowledging the staff shortage in the Sindh Police, he emphasized that recent recruitment has been conducted transparently through IBA-conducted written tests.

Over 50,000 successful candidates have already been issued offer letters, and remaining candidates will be placed on waiting lists for future appointments.

He also stated plans to introduce modern technology into policing and improve operational capabilities.
