CRIME
At least six police personnel were martyred on Monday when police vehicles were targeted in two separate improvised explosive device (IED) attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank and Lakki Marwat districts, officials said.
According to a statement issued by the Tank police spokesperson, an armoured personnel carrier (APC) was targeted with an IED within the jurisdiction of Gomal police station.
“The blast occurred while the APC was on its way to Tank from the Gomal police station,” the spokesperson said, adding that six policemen were martyred in the explosion, including an additional station house officer (SHO).
Rescue 1122 shifted the bodies of the martyred personnel to the District Headquarters Hospital, Tank. Police sealed off the area and launched a massive search and security operation, according to state-run APP.
In a separate incident, another IED blast targeted a police patrol near Darra Tang Road in Lakki Marwat, injuring three police personnel, APP reported.
A police statement said that a SHO and other police personnel sustained minor injuries and were now out of danger.
“Fitna al Khwarij targeted the police APC with an IED explosion while they were patrolling near Jabar Khel on Darra Tang Road within the jurisdiction of Saddar police station,” the statement said.
Fitna al Khwarij is the term used by the state for militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Following the attack, Lakki Marwat District Police Officer (DPO) Nazir Khan reached the site and reviewed the situation. A search operation was subsequently launched in the area.
“These cowardly acts cannot lower our morale,” DPO Nazir Khan said. “Lakki Marwat police are responding vigorously to every challenge and are ready to make every possible sacrifice for the protection of the public.”
He added that police were dealing with Fitna al Khwarij with resolve and that security had been further tightened in the district.
PM, President Condemn Attacks
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an immediate investigation into the Tank attack and directed authorities to bring those responsible to justice at the earliest, according to Radio Pakistan.
The premier reaffirmed the government’s determination to completely eliminate terrorism from the country.
President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of police personnel, paying tribute to their bravery and dedication to national service. He prayed for the elevation of the martyrs’ ranks and patience for their families.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi sought an immediate report from senior police officials and expressed sorrow and anger over the attacks.
“The brave men of KP police embraced martyrdom to protect the lives and property of the people,” the governor said, adding that such acts by “Indian-backed Fitna al Khwarij” could not weaken national resolve.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the attacks, praising the sacrifices of police personnel and stating that their bravery would always be remembered.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also condemned the incidents, calling the martyrdom of police officials an irreparable loss and reaffirming that the nation stood firmly with its security forces.
Rising Attacks on Law Enforcement
The attacks come amid a surge in violence targeting law enforcement agencies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In recent weeks, several policemen and Counter-Terrorism Department officials have been martyred in shootings, bombings and ambushes across Peshawar, Bannu, Bajaur, Khyber, Karak and Lakki Marwat, underscoring growing security challenges in the province.
