In a tragic military accident, a South Korean Air Force KF-16 fighter jet mistakenly released eight MK-82 general-purpose bombs outside the designated firing range during a live-fire exercise, causing multiple civilian casualties and significant property damage.
The incident occurred around 10:00 AM local time in Pocheon, a town located approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) south of the heavily fortified border with North Korea. The Air Force has confirmed four serious injuries and three minor injuries, with displaced residents now seeking shelter.
“We deeply regret the unintended release of the bombs, which resulted in civilian casualties, and wish those injured a swift recovery,” the Air Force said in a statement. Authorities have launched an accident response committee to investigate the cause and have pledged compensation for damages.
Residents described the chaos and fear sparked by the explosion. "I suddenly heard an enormous explosion, like a thunderclap, and the whole house shook," one local, surnamed Park, told Yonhap News Agency. The blast was powerful enough to shatter windows at a senior center a kilometer away, with staff members sustaining injuries.
The incident occurred as South Korea was conducting a joint military drill with the United States, part of ongoing defense efforts amid tensions with North Korea. Similar military mishaps have occurred in the past, raising concerns over safety protocols during live-fire exercises.
As the investigation continues, officials have assured the public that measures will be taken to prevent such accidents in the future.
