The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) tasked with tracing the accused involved in street crime murders has yet to make a single arrest, despite directives from IG Sindh to expedite investigations and apprehend the perpetrators.

Following a surge in unrest and a spike in fatalities due to robberies gone violent, IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon convened a special meeting and directed the SIU to prioritize the investigation and apprehension of suspects involved in street crime incidents. Despite the clear directive, the SIU has failed to make any significant progress in arresting the accused.

Despite assigning 67 of Karachi's top police officers to tackle the most critical cases, including street crime murders, no arrests have been made thus far. The lack of progress is concerning, especially considering that 52 individuals have lost their lives due to robberies turned fatal, with an additional 13 fatalities reported during the holy month of fasting.

In response to the situation, IG Sindh emphasized the need to assign expert and competent Investigation Officers (IOs) to handle the cases. He instructed that all future cases be registered in consultation with the Superintendent of Police (SP) Investigation and specialized IOs. Lists of Special IOs and Investigation Officers have been provided to the Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) for implementation.

Furthermore, IG Sindh emphasized the importance of offering condolences and sympathy to the families of victims. He directed concerned officers to visit the homes of those killed or injured during robbery attempts to express regret and condolences, with plans for his own personal visits as well.

However, some police officers have expressed the need for a more targeted approach. They argue that instead of relying solely on specialized units like the SIU, there should be a focus on appointing expert police officers within the investigation department of police stations. These officers would possess in-depth knowledge of local crimes and the tactics employed by criminals. Additionally, they emphasize the necessity of providing specialized training and courses to investigation officers on modern investigation techniques and technology utilization.
