The GHQ Gate attack case involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and other party leaders saw significant developments on Saturday, as three more prosecution witnesses gave their statements. The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), presided over by Judge Amjad Ali Shah, held the hearing in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, where PTI leaders Salman Akram Raja, Shibli Faraz, and other accused appeared in court.
Key Developments in the Case
During the hearing, the court recorded the statements of three more prosecution witnesses, bringing the total number of recorded testimonies in the case to 12. The ongoing trial concerns the alleged attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) gate, a significant incident linked to political unrest.
On the defense side, lawyer Faisal Malik completed his arguments on the acquittal plea of PTI founder Imran Khan. The defense is seeking the dismissal of charges against Khan, citing insufficient evidence. The court is expected to deliberate on this plea further during upcoming hearings.
Controversies Surrounding the Trial
Amid the proceedings, a dispute arose when the prosecution objected to Bushri Bibi's presence in the courtroom. Bushri Bibi, a convicted criminal, was allegedly seen sitting during the trial, prompting the prosecution to argue that it is unlawful for a convicted individual to attend a case in which they are not involved.
Further, the defense lawyers filed a petition requesting the consolidation of the 13 separate cases related to the May 9 attacks. The petition argues that all the cases stem from the same conspiracy, and as such, a single indictment should be imposed to streamline the process.
Case Adjourned
After hearing these developments, the court adjourned the proceedings until January 29, when further arguments and witness testimonies are expected to take place.
