Three Policemen Martyred in IED Blast Targeting Patrol in DI Khan

Three police officials, including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), were martyred on Wednesday when an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a police patrol vehicle in Paniyala, located within the jurisdiction of the Shaheed Nawab Khan police station, Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to district police spokesperson Yaqoob Zulqarnain, the blast struck a mobile van, killing ASI Gul Alam, Constable Rafiq, and the vehicle’s driver Sakhi Jan. Another constable, Azad Shah, survived the attack.

Police immediately cordoned off the area and launched a search and strike operation. Senior police officials, including the Paniyala deputy superintendent, the station house officer, and DI Khan DPO Sajjad Ahmad Sahibzada, reached the site shortly after the explosion.

A statement issued by the DPO’s office confirmed that the attack had been carried out by “unidentified terrorists,” calling it a “cowardly act” that would not shake the resolve of the police force.

Two Terrorists Killed in Intense Gun Battle

Later, DI Khan Police reported that during the ongoing operation, an intense exchange of gunfire led to the killing of two terrorists linked to “Fitna-al-Khawarij,” while two others were believed to be injured.

The coordinated operation involved personnel from the police force, Al-Burq unit, Elite Force, and bomb disposal squads. Security was heightened across sensitive areas following the attack.

Condemnations Pour In

KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the blast, expressing deep grief over the loss of the three policemen. He praised them for “laying down their lives for the nation” and emphasised that such cowardly attacks would not weaken Pakistan’s resolve.

“Their sacrifices will not go in vain,” the chief minister said, pledging full support for the bereaved families and reaffirming that the fight against terrorism would continue with full force.

KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also denounced the attack, terming it “brutal and cowardly.” He said the martyrs were the "heroes of the nation," and their sacrifices would always be remembered.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as reported by Radio Pakistan, condemned the attack and expressed sorrow over the loss of life. He directed authorities to ensure that those responsible were identified and brought to justice, calling KP Police a frontline force against terrorism.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also paid tribute to the martyred personnel, saying their bravery and sacrifice were “commendable” and would always be honoured.

Rising Threat of Terrorism

The attack is the latest in a string of assaults on police and security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Pakistan has experienced a notable rise in terror incidents, especially after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

DI Khan, in particular, has seen several deadly attacks on law enforcers in recent months, including a bomb blast targeting a police mobile on November 20 and attacks on the Police Training School and a police checkpoint in October.

Authorities say operations will continue until all those involved in Wednesday’s attack are apprehended or neutralised.
