Tomato Prices Surge to Record Rs 600 per Kg as Imports From Iran Slow Down

Tomato prices have surged sharply across Pakistan, reaching up to Rs 600 per kilogram, following the end of the local crop season and reduced imports from neighboring countries. In major cities like Lahore and Peshawar, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 400 to Rs 500 per kg, while in Quetta and Karachi, prices have dropped slightly to around Rs 350 per kg after touching Rs 500 earlier this week. In South Waziristan (Lower Wana), tomatoes are priced at Rs 400 per kg, whereas in Hub city of Balochistan, the rate remains high at Rs 500 per kg. According to market sources, the steep rise in prices is primarily due to the lack of a new local crop and limited supply from Iran, which began after local production ceased. The situation has worsened further as supplies from Afghanistan remain affected, reducing the overall availability of tomatoes in local markets. Retailers say that transportation delays and increased import costs have also contributed to the price spike, leaving consumers struggling to afford the essential kitchen staple. Concerned citizens have expressed frustration over the situation, urging the government to take immediate measures to stabilize prices and ensure a steady supply of tomatoes through import facilitation or price monitoring. The sudden price hike comes amid a broader trend of food inflation in Pakistan, which has already strained household budgets nationwide.
