Dera Ismail Khan – At least 11 people were killed and three others injured after a truck’s brakes failed in the Dana Sar Daranda area of DI Khan, officials confirmed on Friday.
Speaking to Dawn.com, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmad Faizi said the crash claimed the lives of five women, a child, and a man, while three others sustained injuries. “The injured were rushed to the District Headquarter Hospital DI Khan,” he added.
The ill-fated truck was travelling from the Khanozai area of Balochistan. According to Faizi, Rescue 1122 teams transported seven bodies to the hospital, while local residents shifted the remaining four. The identities of the deceased are yet to be established.
Public Relations Officer of DI Khan Police, Yaqoob Khan, said efforts were underway to identify the victims and hand over the bodies to their families.
Accidents are tragically common on Pakistan’s highways and motorways, often attributed to reckless driving, speeding, driver fatigue, and poor vehicle maintenance. Weak traffic law enforcement and deteriorating road conditions further worsen the situation.
The DI Khan tragedy comes just weeks after several fatal accidents across the country. On September 11, two women were killed and four injured in Mansehra when a jeep plunged into a ravine. Earlier, on September 9, five members of a family lost their lives in a collision with a trailer on the Hazara Motorway in Haripur. In July, five people were killed in DI Khan district when a car collided with a truck on Chashma Road.
Authorities have launched an investigation into Friday’s incident, as families await the identification of the deceased.
