Trump, Asim Munir Discuss Iran War as Pakistan Eyes Mediation Role

The White House has confirmed that Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with Asim Munir regarding the ongoing conflict involving Iran, signalling heightened diplomatic engagement in the region.

According to international media reports, the discussion focused on the evolving situation surrounding the Iran war and potential avenues for de-escalation. While details of the conversation remain undisclosed, officials described it as part of ongoing sensitive diplomatic efforts.

Responding to questions about a possible visit to Islamabad by US Special Representative for South Asia Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, White House spokesperson Caroline Lute declined to confirm any plans. She emphasised that such discussions are highly sensitive and cannot be negotiated through the media.

“In the current environment, speculation regarding meetings should not be taken as final until officially announced by the White House,” Lute stated, urging caution amid growing reports of diplomatic engagements.

Meanwhile, US media outlets have claimed that Washington has conveyed a set of 15 proposals to Iran through Pakistan, highlighting Islamabad’s emerging role as a potential intermediary in the crisis.

The diplomatic momentum follows a recent telephone conversation between Shehbaz Sharif and Masoud Pezeshkian, during which both leaders agreed to continue Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.

Earlier reports suggested that senior US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, along with Witkoff and Kushner, could potentially participate in talks related to Iran in Islamabad next week. However, no official confirmation has been issued.

On the Pakistani side, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that Pakistan is willing to host mediation efforts, provided all parties involved agree to engage in dialogue.

The developments underscore Pakistan’s increasing diplomatic relevance amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, as global powers explore possible pathways to resolve the crisis through negotiation rather than confrontation.
