US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States will keep Greenland “whether anyone likes it or not”, citing strategic concerns over potential Chinese or Russian influence.
Trump warned that if the US does not occupy Greenland, China or Russia might move in, making them neighbors. He added that he prefers a simple approach to secure Greenland, but hinted at adopting a “difficult method” if necessary.
The reaction from Greenland has been swift. In a joint statement, five major political parties asserted that the power to decide lies with the people of Greenland. They emphasized their preference to remain Greenlanders rather than become American or Danish, highlighting the islanders’ desire to retain autonomy over their future.
The statement underlines Greenland’s insistence on self-determination amid growing international interest in the Arctic region.
