Washington, October 27, 2025 — United States President Donald Trump on Monday ruled out the possibility of running for vice president in the 2028 election, dismissing the suggestion as “too cute” and saying it would not sit well with the public.
“I’d be allowed to do that,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, referring to the idea floated by some of his supporters as a potential route to a third term in office. “But I wouldn’t do that. I think it’s too cute. I think the people wouldn’t like that. It wouldn’t be right.”
Trump’s comments come amid speculation following his recent public appearances and the circulation of “Trump 2028” merchandise at White House events.
Under the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution, no individual can be elected president more than twice. However, some Trump supporters have theorized that he could legally run as vice president alongside a Republican candidate who could later step aside, allowing him to reassume the presidency — an interpretation that many legal experts dispute.
When asked whether he would entirely rule out a third term, Trump responded ambiguously, saying, “Am I not ruling it out? I mean, you’ll have to tell me.”
Praising Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump added that both could be strong contenders for the presidency in the future. “If they ever formed a group, it’d be unstoppable,” he said.
